Association of Catholic Computer Programmers

Catholics interested in software engineering best practices

I'm curious to know what computer science and religious books people are currently reading.

I'm reading:
- Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture by Fowler. Interestingly written - not dry.
- John Henry Newman by Ker. Biography of the great English cardinal. At times thrilling, at times a bit dry and boring.

What are you reading?

Hi Giovani!

Good Amazon reviews so far: four reviews, 5-stars each.

Ooh, the author of "Googling God" - Mike Hayes, came to Seattle recently and gave a talk at Seattle University; I really enjoyed his talk as he gave us ideas on how to discern what our life's calling is. If you're questioning what you're really called to do in life, then I'd say check this book out. I didn't read his book, but if his talk was any indication of how good the books is, I say buy it! Also, there's really cool information in his website, http://www.bustedhalo.com

Other books I've been reading lately are:
* The Shattered Lantern - Ronald Rolheiser
* The Holy Longing - Ronald Rolheiser
* Living Simply in an Anxious World - Robert J. Wicks
* Enjoy the Lord - A Path to Contemplation - John T. Catoir, JCD

I highly recommend the above books, look them up on Amazon. Ronald Rolheiser is amazing, although some of his other books can get pretty heavy; but start with The Holy Longing. Another book that is a MUST read is Orthodoxy by G.K Chesterton -- if you haven't already, go order it today!

As for computer-related books, I'm currently reading Emergent Design: The Evolutionary Nature of Professional Software Development by Scott Bain. So far so good ... I've attended a talk by him at a NetObjectives free seminar, and was very impressed with him. Our company has been fortunate enough to have had some training engagements through NetObjectives for Scrum Master certification, Product Owner training in Lean Agile, and Test-Driven Development training.

Here I list the 104 authors (and recommended titles) mentioned in Fr. Hardon's "Catholic Lifetime Reading Plan", with descriptions of each from Wikipedia: http://cooltoolsforcatholics.blogspot.com/2009/03/book-list-from-ha...

I'm reading The Everlasting Man by G. K. Chesterton for my personal interest, and Learning Processing: A Beginner's Guide to Programming Images, Animation, and Interaction by Daniel Shiffman, for a High School programming class I'm going to teach in the Fall. If you haven't tried Processing (see processing.org), you might want to check it out. It is just fun to play with, and it reminds me of the fun I had programming in Basic on the Apple II (yes, I'm that old), except that it's based on Java and has much better graphics than the Apple II. I think it will be a great way for people to learn how to program. I guess I will find out next Fall.

Religious:
just finished
Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures by Pope Benedict XVI when he was Cardinal J. Ratzinger. Very accessible and relevant.
currently reading
Theology of the Body Explained: A Commentary on John Paul II's "Man and Woman He Created Them" by Christopher West.
The writing is clear, but the thoughts are so dense I find myself stopping to think about them after almost every paragraph.
Programming: currently reading and using
Learning Drupal 6: Module Development by Matt Butcher

Nice ones, Mary!

I’m going to look up Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures.

Mary, TOB for Beginners was great! You'll never look at the Eucharist the same way. Nor marriage, sex, etc.
