There are certain songs that I can say are a part of myself, because of repeated singing in my childhood and teenage years. From elementary school assemblies (St. Michaels University School), the following songs have a special place in my heart:

  • And did those feet in ancient times
  • I vow to thee my country
  • Glorious things of thee are spoken
  • Lord of all hopefulness

In high school, we used the hymnal “Hymns Ancient and Modern” (the school had Episcopalian/Anglican roots), from which I treasure the following hymns:

  • Guide me O thou great redeemer
  • Praise, my soul, the King of heaven
  • Thou whose almighty Word
  • Now thank we all our God

I also have a soft spot in my heart for these songs from my early Evangelical Protestant years in university:

  • As the deer
  • I love you, Lord
  • Refiner’s fire
  • Create in me a clean heart

What favorite hymns have been so ingrained into your heart that you consider them to be a part of yourself?

I have always really liked the Prayer of St. Francis. Also, the Salve Regina is among my favorites.

My top three:

Ave Verum Corpus (Mozart)
Ave Maria (Schubert)
Panis Angelicus (Franck)

They are still sung at many traditional Latin High Masses.
