I would rather do something spiritually renewing than "give up something". I remember years ago when I "gave up sweets" type thing, I couldn't wait for Lent to end. Then one Lent I was working in the church giftshop (volunteering) and found something called "the little black book" and decided to try it. You read something daily then write in a spiritual diary what relevance it has in your life... kind of read and pray type thing. Well, anyway, I DID that and it was wonderful! The next year I did the same type of thing with a book on meditations from the Prodigal Son by Nowien - it was so relevant in my life and I gained so much out of it that I was disappointed when Lent ended.... This year I planned on the "little black book" but never got to the gift shop to get one so will either watch the Mass on EWTN and write from there or else I have a bunch of other spiritual books I've been wanting to read... have to decide soon, it's Ash Wednesday! :)

I'm not doing anything as exciting as you, Sue - just the standard "give up something" (giving up restaurants, fasting once a week, and praying the rosary daily). But actually it's exciting for me because I haven't *really* tried giving something up for Lent before this year, for some reason.
